The Story

The bar and restaurant that Cartola and his wife Dona Zica opened in 1963 on Rua da Carioca, where for the first time, samba from the favelas and bossa nova from the South Zone sat together. Nara Leão, Edu Lobo, and Carlos Lyra ate alongside samba musicians from Mangueira. The place closed in 1965, two years before Cartola was rediscovered washing cars in the South Zone. A plaque marks the building. Today it’s a store.
