The Story

Cartola was a co-founder of the Mangueira samba school and one of the genre's most poetic voices. He spent decades in anonymity, working as a car washer and night watchman, before two comeback albums in the 1970s introduced him to a new generation. He died in 1980 and is buried in Caju cemetery alongside his partner Dona Zica. The exact location can be confirmed with the administration.
