Cartola

A co-founder of the Mangueira samba school and one of the most poetic voices of the genre, Cartola spent decades in anonymity, even owning a small laundry business, before two comeback albums in the 1970s introduced him to a new generation. He died in 1980 and is buried in Caju Cemetery alongside his partner Dona Zica. The exact location can be confirmed at the administration office.
