Workin' With the Miles Davis

Miles Davis, John Coltrane

1959

The Story

The cover photo was taken in front of 447 West 50th Street, in Hell's Kitchen, by photographer Esmond Edwards. Across the street, at number 446, was the office of Prestige Records, which rented number 447 as an extension of its offices. Miles Davis stands on the sidewalk with a cigarette in his hand, with the High School of Graphic Communication Arts building in the background. The album was released in December 1959, but the sessions were recorded over two days in May and October 1956 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, with John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones. From the four sessions of those two days came four albums: Cookin', Relaxin', Workin', and Steamin'. Number 446, where Prestige Records used to be, is now a barbershop.
