The Story

Blue plaque marking the house in Belgravia where eight-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed his first symphony during a stay in London in 1764. His father Leopold was recovering from an illness nearby and demanded absolute silence in the house, even forbidding the use of the keyboard, so the boy composed the symphony entirely in his head, in silence. Mozart spent more than a year in London during a grand European tour, a formative period in his musical development, which included performances for King George III and meeting Johann Christian Bach.
