Queen, Freddie Mercury

1980–1991

The Story

The villa in Kensington known as Garden Lodge, where Freddie Mercury lived from 1980 until his death on November 24, 1991. He bought it for £500,000 and redesigned the interior with Victorian and Japanese influences, including a Japanese-style garden and living room. The green garden door became a permanent pilgrimage site covered with fan tributes and was sold at a Sotheby's auction in 2023 for over £400,000, along with hundreds of other belongings from the house. The house itself was put up for sale by Mary Austin in 2024 for over £30 million.
