The Story

This Victorian pub at 49 Chalk Farm Road was called The Monarch and is another one of British rock's important landmarks. Barfly opened in 1997 on the upper floor and became the obligatory rite of passage for British indie music. Before filling stadiums, Coldplay played here in 2000 to showcase songs from their debut album, Parachutes. Amy Winehouse, Muse, The Strokes, Adele, Arctic Monkeys, The Libertines, Franz Ferdinand, Ed Sheeran, and The XX are some of the names that graced this stage. It closed in 2016, reopened as Camden Assembly, and in June 2026, it reopened under its original name, with Frank Turner playing on the reopening night.
