The Story
Opened in 1993, the Viper Room gained worldwide fame when River Phoenix died on the sidewalk outside on October 31 of that same year. He was there for a performance by Flea's band, of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, when he fell ill. The club was partly owned by Johnny Depp. Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, and Iggy Pop played here in surprise shows. Still active on the Sunset Strip, it has been the setting for several films.
