This studio opened in 1988 in a SoHo loft, founded by engineer Steve Rosenthal, and for 28 years it was one of New York's most respected recording addresses. Lou Reed, Ramones, Norah Jones, Sonic Youth, Rolling Stones, Coldplay, Arcade Fire, and Foo Fighters passed through these rooms. In complete secrecy, without anyone knowing, David Bowie returned in 2015 to record his last album, Blackstar, released on January 8, 2016, two days before his death. Each musician involved signed a confidentiality agreement, and the team reduced its own staff on recording days to keep the secret out of respect for the artist. The studio had already hosted Bowie three years earlier for The Next Day. In 2016, Dave Grohl donated about fifty thousand dollars trying to save the space from real estate speculation and even made an offer to buy the building, but the owner refused. The Magic Shop permanently closed on March 16, 2016.
