Lou Reed New York

Lou Reed

The Story

This narrow street in Tribeca was the location where Lou Reed posed for the cover of the album *New York*, released in 1989. The concept originated from a 1932 photograph by Hungarian photographer Brassaï, *La Bande du Grand Albert*, a portrait of a Parisian street gang, with creative direction by Sylvia Reed, Lou's wife at the time. As in Brassaï's original, the black and white image creates a somber dark street atmosphere. The album is considered one of the high points of his solo career, with a raw depiction of the city.
