The Story

In May of 1962, Brian Jones placed an ad in Jazz News looking for musicians for a new R&B band and scheduled auditions at the Bricklayers Arms pub, at this address in Soho. Ian Stewart was the first to answer. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards showed up later. It was here, in an upstairs room of a pub, that the Rolling Stones began. The building is now Sounds of the Universe, a record store founded by Stuart Baker in the early 90s and the physical home of the Soul Jazz Records label, specializing in reggae, dub, soul, jazz, funk, house, afrobeat, and Brazilian music. New and used vinyl, books, and DVDs. One of the largest selections of World Music at a single address.
