The Story

This underground theater opened on March 22, 1934, at the height of Cinelândia. In 1970, it came under the direction of Américo Leal, who made the venue a stronghold of musical theater until his daughter Ângela Leal took over in the 90s, with the help of her granddaughter, actress Leandra Leal. Since 2001, it has been sponsored by Petrobras, with a hiatus between 2019 and 2023 under the sponsorship of Refinaria Refit, resumed by Petrobras in 2024 to celebrate the venue's 90th anniversary. In 2005, the theater itself became a carnival theme, with the Alegria da Zona Sul samba school honoring its seventy years. Today, it is a mandatory meeting point for great names in samba, choro, and MPB, with programming and feijoadas accompanied by live music.
