The Story

The name Cidade do Rock (City of Rock) does not refer to a fixed address, but rather to the space built for each edition of Rock in Rio, and it has had four different locations in Rio de Janeiro. The first, in 1985, was a plot of land on Avenida Salvador Allende in Jacarepaguá, near Riocentro. The original site was demolished after the 1985 festival. In 1991, the festival moved to the Maracanã. In 2011, 2013, and 2015, it took place at Parque dos Atletas, across from Riocentro. Since 2017, the permanent address has been the Parque Olímpico in Barra da Tijuca. Built for the 2016 Olympic Games, it is now Rio's largest concert venue, with a capacity of 100,000 people per day. Over the years, the various Cidades do Rock have hosted Queen, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Guns N' Roses, Coldplay, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, and Iron Maiden, among hundreds of other artists over nearly four decades of the festival.
