The Story

This is the oldest continuously operating movie theater in Rio de Janeiro, inaugurated on October 30, 1909, on Rua da Carioca, in the city center. Designed by engineer Paulo de Frontin, it has gone through several phases over a century. It was a variety theater, a martial arts cinema in the 70s, and showed adult films in the 80s. In the 90s and 2000s, it became the stage for the Loud! parties on Fridays and weekends, where Los Hermanos, Autoramas, and other bands from Rio's alternative scene performed. In July 2004, Los Hermanos recorded their DVD Ao Vivo no Cine Íris here. The building has been listed as a heritage site by INEPAC since 1978. It is still operating at the same address.
