The Story

Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman founded Sub Pop in 1986, but it wasn't until April 1988 that the duo quit their jobs and set up their first real office here, on the 11th floor of a building where the elevator only went up to the 10th. Here they signed Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Mudhoney and invented the aesthetic of the Seattle scene. To promote the 1989 Lame Fest, they brought British journalist Everett True from London. The Melody Maker article put Seattle grunge on the world map.
