For over forty years, Canecão was Rio's most important concert hall. Every big name in Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) and Brazilian rock played here, as well as international artists passing through the city. It closed in 2010 amidst disputes with UFRJ over the land. Generations of "cariocas" (Rio natives) have memories tied to this stage.
