The Ramones
1977
The Queens beach that inspired one of the most upbeat Ramones songs, "Rockaway Beach," from the 1977 album *Rocket to Russia*. Dee Dee Ramone and the other band members spent their summers here as teenagers, dreaming of escaping Forest Hills. The song became the closest the Ramones ever got to a mainstream hit. The Beach 94th Street Amphitheater in Rockaway Beach is an open-air venue located right on the iconic boardwalk, where musicians and fans launched a major campaign to officially name it "The Ramones Rockaway Beach Amphitheater." The venue regularly hosts Ramones tribute nights.
