Quadra do Salgueiro

The Story

Founded on Morro do Salgueiro, in Tijuca, in 1953, Salgueiro was the samba school that broke the unwritten rule of carnival. In 1960, with the theme "Quilombo dos Palmares," it became a pioneer in bringing Afro-Brazilian culture and Black historical figures, like Zumbi, and later Chica da Silva and Chico Rei, to the center of the parade, at a time when other schools completely avoided the subject. This decision changed what carnival could be. The samba school's court in Andaraí is known for its lively Saturday rehearsals and one of the city's most celebrated feijoadas.
