Quadra do Salgueiro

The Story

Founded in Santa Teresa in 1953, the Salgueiro was the school that broke carnival's unspoken rule. In 1960, it became the first to use the favela and its people as the subject of a parade, at a time when other schools avoided the topic entirely. That decision changed what carnival could be about. The quadra in Andaraí is known for its lively Saturday rehearsals and one of the most celebrated feijoadas in the city.
