Martinho da Vila, Vila Isabel
Est. 1946
Founded in 1946 in the neighborhood of Noel Rosa, Vila Isabel won the 1988 carnival with the enredo Kizomba, Festa da Raça, widely considered one of the greatest samba-enredo ever written, a celebration of African heritage so powerful that Martinho da Vila wept on the avenue. The quadra sits on the boulevard that bears the year of Brazil's abolition of slavery.
