Beija-Flor de Nilópolis
1948
Founded in Nilópolis in 1948, Beija-Flor became the most dominant school of the modern carnival era with 15 titles since 1974. In 1978 the school presented the enredo Não Existe Pecado ao Sul do Equador, which took aim at the military dictatorship's censorship and poverty, and won. It was the first time a samba school used the avenue as direct political protest. Rehearsals draw crowds from across Greater Rio.
