The Ramones
1977
The narrow dead-end alley known as Extra Place, between East 1st Street and Bowery, was the chosen setting for the cover of The Ramones' third album, Rocket to Russia, in 1977. The alley was right behind CBGB, the club where the band frequently performed and helped shape the entire New York punk scene. It was there, leaning against a doorway, that Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee, and Tommy posed for one of the genre's most recognizable images.
