Itamar Assumpção, Viper, Premeditando o Breque, Grupo Rumo
1979–1980s
A small, makeshift basement, with just over 150 official seats, accidentally became the epicenter of one of the most creative movements in Brazilian music. Founded in October 1979 by Wilson Souto Jr. and Valdir Galeano, Lira Paulistana started as a theater, but quickly became the hotspot for a generation of artists who didn't fit into what major record labels considered "commercial." Itamar Assumpção, Arrigo Barnabé, Premeditando o Breque, and Grupo Rumo passed through there, mixing experimental jazz, samba, breque, and rock into a new language that came to be called Vanguarda Paulista. When the basement became too small, the shows would even spill out into the neighboring square. It closed in 1986, after seven years shaping what would become one of the most influential scenes in the history of São Paulo music. Also on April 8, 1985, Viper played its first show. A date always celebrated by the band.
