This bronze statue, sculpted by Leandro Júnior, honors Itamar Assumpção, an icon of São Paulo's avant-garde music scene. Inaugurated on December 15, 2021, it was the first in a series of statues of Black personalities commissioned by the São Paulo City Hall, created by Black artists, in a city where less than 5% of monuments represent Black people. The choice of location also marks one year of MU.ITA, the first virtual museum dedicated to a Black Brazilian artist, created by his daughter, the singer and songwriter Anelis Assumpção. Itamar challenged the dominance of record labels over the music market and built a career based on artistic freedom. At the inauguration, Gilberto Gil spoke about the artist, and Anelis performed alongside Rincón Sapiência.
