The street corner at East 2nd and Bowery, directly in front of the former CBGB venue, was renamed Joey Ramone Place in 2003 in honour of the Ramones frontman who died in 2001. CBGB itself closed in 2008 after 33 years as the birthplace of punk and new wave.
