The Story

This house was where Jerry Garcia, at the age of five, after his father's death, came to live with his maternal grandparents and his brother Tiff. He spent five formative years here, attending Monroe Elementary School. Jerry Garcia wrote his only book about his memories of this neighborhood, called *Harrington Street*, which was released posthumously. In April 2025, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a proposal naming the stretch of Harrington Street between Alemany Boulevard and Mission Street "Jerry Garcia Street." The official unveiling of the new signs took place on August 1, 2025, the day Jerry would have turned 83, as part of a grand celebration of the Grateful Dead's 60th anniversary in San Francisco, which included the traditional Jerry Day festival and Dead & Company concerts at Golden Gate Park.
