The Story

The purple Victorian house where Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Pigpen McKernan, and the other members of the Grateful Dead lived from 1966 to 1968. On October 2, 1967, eleven people were arrested there in a police raid for marijuana possession. After Jerry Garcia's death in 1995, a spontaneous memorial began here at the intersection of Haight and Ashbury before the crowd moved on to Golden Gate Park that night. Private residence.
