The Story

The purple Victorian house where Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Pigpen McKernan, and the other members of the Grateful Dead lived from 1966 to 1968. On October 2, 1967, eleven residents were arrested in a police raid. The spontaneous memorial after Jerry Garcia's death in 1995 began here, at the intersection of Haight and Ashbury, where two thousand people gathered that same night. Private residence.
