Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane
1966
This large stretch of grass, between Oak and Fell streets, was the stage for at least five free Grateful Dead concerts over an eight-month period between 1966 and 1967, playing directly from the back of a truck parked in the middle of the park. The first was the Love Pageant Rally, on October 6, 1966, bringing together the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company. On June 25, 1967, at the height of the Summer of Love, it was Jimi Hendrix's turn to play for free for the Panhandle public, in one of the most remembered moments of the era.
