Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Aretha Franklin
Est. 1954
Built in 1912, it was renamed the Fillmore Auditorium in 1954 by Charles Sullivan, the most successful African-American entrepreneur on the West Coast, who booked James Brown, Billie Holiday, and Louis Armstrong. Charles was murdered in 1966 and Bill Graham took over the venue. The Grateful Dead played 51 shows here from 1965 to 1969. The iconic psychedelic posters created for Fillmore shows are still given away for free to fans at sold-out shows. Aretha Franklin recorded the legendary Aretha Live at Fillmore West here.
