Garage Art Cult

The Story

This club on Rua Ceará was the most important underground venue in Rio de Janeiro between the late 80s and early 90s. For about fifteen years, it was known as Garage Art Cult, revealing local and national rock bands before they became famous, including Los Hermanos, Planet Hemp, and Dead Fish. Buzzcocks, Madball, Exodus, and Agnostic Front performed here at a time when there was a lack of medium-sized concert venues in the city. The city government removed the houses of Vila Mimosa from Praça Onze and relocated the prostitution zone to the surroundings of Rua Ceará, giving the region a dual and contradictory identity that persists to this day. The club closed, but the space was reclaimed and reopened in 2023 as Garage Grindhouse, keeping alive the tradition of rock, metal, punk, and hardcore shows at the same historic address.
