Opened on June 16, 1950, for the World Cup, the Maracanã entered music history on January 27, 1980, when Frank Sinatra sang to 170,000 people. Paul McCartney followed on the same stage in April 1990, for 184,000 people. In January 1991, the Maracanã hosted the second edition of Rock in Rio with Guns N' Roses, Faith No More, Prince, Billy Idol, Judas Priest, and George Michael. A-ha gathered 198,000 people in a single day. In 1995, the Rolling Stones returned for the first time with opening acts Barão Vermelho and Rita Lee. Los Hermanos filled the Maracanã in 2019 for the band's reunion show. The temple of football also hosted another World Cup final in 2014, was the opening venue for the Rio Olympics, and also features a museum for visitors.
