The Story

London's most famous music street is nestled between Charing Cross Road and St Giles High Street. It has been home to music publishers, recording studios, and instrument shops since the 1890s, with the first music publisher settling there in 1911. The Rolling Stones recorded their debut album here, at Regent Sound Studio, at number 4. The Sex Pistols occupied number 6, where they lived and recorded their first demos, including "Anarchy in the UK". Elton John and Bernie Taupin wrote their first songs at number 20, including "Your Song". A publisher here even rejected songs by a young Paul Simon for "lack of commercial appeal." Even today, it still boasts operating instrument stores.
