The Story

The cover photo was taken at the intersection of Plymouth Street and Pearl Street, in DUMBO, Brooklyn, when the neighborhood was still a maze of brick warehouses, train tracks, and iron bridges. Cyndi Lauper is pictured with the arches of the Manhattan Bridge in the background. The album was released in May 1989 and recorded at the Hit Factory in New York. Lauper herself refers to the album in interviews as "A Night to Forget," the first without the commercial success of her previous works. The DUMBO where the photo was taken is now one of New York's most sought-after neighborhoods. The view of the Manhattan Bridge arches with the Brooklyn Bridge in the background is now one of the most photographed spots in the city.
