The Story

On the block in Olaria, a Carnival block founded on January 20, 1961, on Saint Sebastian's Day, becoming the birthplace of Carioca pagode. In 1977, Beth Carvalho was invited to a roda here and found musicians playing a banjo like a cavaquinho, a hand repique, and a tantã, three new instruments for urban samba. Declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Rio in 2010.
