The Story

Richard Ashcroft of The Verve walked down this street in Hoxton, bumping into everyone in The Verve’s Bittersweet Symphony music video in 1997. The shot starts at the corner of Hoxton Street and Falkirk Street, with Ashcroft heading north, not deviating for anyone. One of the most recognizable music videos of the Britpop era. The song used a sample from an orchestral version of a Rolling Stones track, costing the band all of The Verve’s royalties, with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards receiving the songwriting credits. In 2019, the two returned full rights and credits to Ashcroft.
