The front and back cover photos were taken on the steps of 142 Mercer Street by photographer Gilles Larrain. On the front cover, Billy Joel is alone on the steps. On the back cover, members of his band appear. The album was released in August 1983 and is a tribute to the American music of Joel's adolescence, with tracks inspired by 50s and 60s soul. At the time, Joel was recently divorced, which gave the album a different personal tone. The building still stands at the same address. What was a bar when Bob Egan of PopSpots identified the location in the 2000s is now Prada's flagship store in New York.
