Berkeley Community Theater

The Story

This Art Deco theater began construction in 1941, but was only inaugurated on June 5, 1950, due to World War II. In the 1960s and 70s, this 3,500-capacity venue hosted Led Zeppelin, The Who, Bob Dylan, and Jimi Hendrix, who recorded the live album *Live at Berkeley* here in May 1970. The Grateful Dead also played here several times throughout the 70s. It still functions as a theater and has the largest Wurlitzer organ in the region.
