Bee Gees
1968-1980
This 1723 Georgian mansion in Mayfair was the home and office of Robert Stigwood, the Australian entrepreneur who managed the Bee Gees, Cream, and Eric Clapton, and produced Saturday Night Fever, Grease, and Jesus Christ Superstar. Between 1968 and 1980, Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb spent a good deal of time here rehearsing, composing, and recording. It was at this address that the three brothers composed the soundtracks for Saturday Night Fever in 1977, met John Travolta for the first time, and wrote Spirits Having Flown, an album that sold more than 20 million copies. Robin Gibb said that the place means a lot to the band and that it was here that they wrote a great deal of their music. The green plaque on the facade was unveiled by Robin himself in May 2008. The building is a few doors down from number 23, where Jimi Hendrix lived in the late 60s.
