The Who, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, The Kinks, Cream, Bee Gees, Status Quo
1969
This studio at 35 Portland Place was founded in 1930 as a commercial rival to the BBC and became one of London's most important studios in the 1960s. IBC was The Who's favorite studio: My Generation and the rock opera Tommy were recorded here. Jimi Hendrix recorded Hey Joe in these rooms. David Bowie recorded his first sessions here in 1965 with Jimmy Page as a session guitarist. The Kinks and Cream also passed through here. Between October 1969 and January 1970, Deep Purple recorded the initial sessions for In Rock with the Mark II lineup for the first time. Speed King, Child in Time, and Into the Fire took shape in these rooms. In 1978, the studio was bought by Chas Chandler, former bassist of The Animals and Jimi Hendrix's manager, who renamed it Portland Recording Studios. The building no longer operates as a studio.
