The Cumberland Hotel

Jimi Hendrix

1970

The Story

This hotel was where Jimi Hendrix regularly stayed in the 60s, and where he checked in for the last time on September 6, 1970, after returning from the Fehmarn Festival in Germany. On the fifth floor, in suite 507, he gave his last interview to journalist Keith Altham on September 11, discussing the band's future, Billy Cox's departure, and plans to re-record with Chas Chandler. Six days later, he died at the Samarkand Hotel in Notting Hill. The Cumberland is listed as his last official address on his death certificate. Jimi wrote song lyrics on the hotel's stationery, and the manuscripts are in the Experience Hendrix archives. Today, the hotel has the Jimi Hendrix Suite with psychedelic murals, vintage fabrics, and a decorated replica Flying V. A blue plaque was unveiled on the facade in 2022.
