The Story

Built in 1846 as a locomotive shed, the Roundhouse was a warehouse for decades before being abandoned. On October 15, 1966, it reopened with the launch party of the underground newspaper International Times. That night, Pink Floyd and Soft Machine took the stage, Paul McCartney was in costume, and Marianne Faithfull and Mick Jagger appeared together in public for the first time. On February 22, 1967, Jimi Hendrix played here and had his black Stratocaster stolen from the side of the stage during the show. On November 9, 1968, Led Zeppelin played their first London show under their definitive name. Robert Plant had gotten married that morning, and the wedding party was the show itself. The Doors played their only two UK shows with Jim Morrison here in September 1968. Closed in 1983, it reopened in 2006 after a £30 million renovation. Still active.
