The Story

This open-air amphitheater, inspired by ancient Greek theaters, was built for the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. Only after the war did it get its current name. With a capacity of 22,000 people and surrounded by forest near the Olympic Stadium, the venue became one of the largest open-air stages in Europe. In 1965, a Rolling Stones concert ended in a riot, with fans destroying chairs and fighting with the police. The venue remained practically dormant for years after that. It made a strong comeback in 1980 with a historic Bob Marley concert. Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and David Bowie also performed there. The Berlin Philharmonic has held an annual concert at the venue since 1984. Still active every summer.
