Madonna, Jellybean Benitez
1978-2002
This record store opened on Carmine Street in 1978 and became one of New York's temples of dance music, frequented by legendary DJs like Larry Levan. Madonna was a regular customer while dating DJ and producer Jellybean Benitez, who remixed part of her debut album. On August 26, 1983, a month after the album's release by Sire Records, she held her first autograph session here, one of the only such events in her entire career. The store permanently closed in 2007, one of the last dance music vinyl temples to survive in the city.
