Grandmaster Flash, Kool Herc, Wu-Tang Clan, Mark Ronson, A Tribe Called Quest

Opened in 1975 by Joseph Bechor, the same year New York City nearly went bankrupt. It started as a regular electronics and record store but became home to the city's DJs, being one of the first stores in the world entirely dedicated to this audience. Grandmaster Flash, Kool Herc, Grand Wizard Theodore, DJ Red Alert, and other hip-hop pioneers bought their records and equipment there, with some continuing to frequent the store and perform at its events to this day. The Wu-Tang Clan sold records on consignment at the store before they became famous. Rock and Soul also hosted clients such as Mark Ronson, The Edge of U2, and A Tribe Called Quest. Still active, now on West 37th Street, it celebrates fifty years as one of the most respected temples of DJ culture in the world.
