Madonna
1970s-1980s
This place marks one of the first addresses where Madonna lived alone in New York, after spending a period sharing apartments and even occupying old rooms in the East Village. It was in this neighborhood that she began to turn her dream of making a living from music into a reality, working odd jobs while frequenting clubs, auditioning for bands, and meeting people who would change her career. In 1982, photographer Richard Corman did one of the artist's first photo shoots here. Years later, he recalled having to call from a phone booth across the street before going up because Madonna wanted to warn her neighbors about the visit. Today, the building is a pilgrimage destination for fans who want to see where one of pop music's biggest stars lived before the release of her first album in 1983.
