The Story

This East Village location became a recording studio in 1998, founded by Gordon Raphael, a Seattle producer who moved to New York, and Jimmy Goodman. Gordon Raphael met The Strokes at a show at Luna Lounge and produced the band's debut EP. The band returned between March and April 2001 to record their debut album *Is This It*, considered one of the most influential indie rock albums of the 2000s. Raphael also produced the band's second album, *Room on Fire*, here, and recorded part of *Soviet Kitsch* by Regina Spektor, then an unknown singer from the Bronx. In 2002, on the verge of closing due to financial issues, partner Jimmy Goodman took over the business and moved the studio out of the city, changing its name to Leopard Studio. The site is currently home to Flux Studios NYC, which kept one of its rooms named "Transporter Room" in honor of the iconic studio. Flux Studios expanded its space throughout the building, and David Crosby, André 3000, Jennifer Lopez, and Lorde have all passed through its doors.
