The Story

The Midtown studio where John Lennon performed the final overdubs for Imagine, Bruce Springsteen recorded Born to Run, and Aerosmith recorded Toys in the Attic. Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, and Patti Smith also recorded here. It was on one of the building's stairwells that Steven Tyler, having lost the lyrics to "Walk This Way" in a taxi, wrote the new version in pencil directly on the wall while the rest of the band waited outside. The original studio closed in 1987, but its legacy defined a generation of American rock.
