Tomi Jazz

The Story

This Jazz Club was founded in the Little Tokyo area, near East 9th Street, back in the 90s, as a strictly private club catering only to Japanese patrons, at a time of strong presence of executives and expats in the city. Around 2000, it moved to the basement of a building on East 53rd Street, in Midtown East, maintaining discreet access through a heavy door. In 2010, Ken Mukohata bought the bar and opened it to the general public, establishing a daily live jazz program. The concept mixes the format of a Japanese listening bar with the charm of New York. The space is modest, but with live music every night. Today it is one of the most sought-after places in New York, with queues that can last several hours.
