The Strokes, Interpol, Elliott Smith, The National, Nada Surf
1995-2005
This bar opened in 1995, founded by Dianne Galliano and Robert Sacher, in the Lower East Side. Over a decade, it became one of New York's most important clubs, with free shows every night, six days a week. It was here that Elliott Smith wrote the songs for his first major-label album, and where The Strokes regularly performed before recording their debut album at Transporterraum, just across the street. Interpol, The National, and Nada Surf also played on this small stage. The club closed on June 12, 2005, when the building's owner sold the property, which was then converted into a hotel. Robert Sacher even reopened a second location in Williamsburg in 2007 but it closed in 2008.
