This theater complex began with the idea of being an alternative circuit Lincoln Center, mixing experimental theater, video art, and performances. To help with renovations, the center opened its doors to new bands looking for a place to rehearse. The New York Dolls played their first show there on May 5, 1972, receiving fifteen dollars to play at the Blue Room Theater, and became a regular Tuesday night residency. Modern Lovers, Suicide, and Wayne County also regularly played in the same space. Elton John and Andy Warhol were regulars. On New Year's Eve 1972-1973, the New York Dolls played a New Year's show with Wayne County and Modern Lovers in the audience. On the afternoon of August 3, 1973, hours before another show, some cracks worsened and the building was hastily evacuated, and minutes later the eight-story building collapsed, killing four people. It was the tragic end of the space that, even before CBGB existed, helped sow the seeds of punk. The land is now occupied by Hayden Hall, an NYU student residence.
