The Story

Opened in 1892, the theater hosted the 1928 world premiere of Bertolt Brecht and composer Kurt Weill's Die Dreigroschenoper (The Threepenny Opera). This masterpiece revolutionized musical theater, blending cabaret, jazz, and social criticism. In 1954, the theater became the permanent home of Bertolt Brecht's world-famous theater company. Its musical legacy continues today with directors like Robert Wilson crafting productions to music by contemporary artists like Rufus Wainwright and Lou Reed.
