1978
This former studio in Shepherd's Bush was built in 1978 by Richard Branson for Virgin Records, with three rooms equipped with the first SSL consoles installed in the UK. Studio 2's Stone Room made history in 1979 when engineer Hugh Padgham accidentally left the talkback mic open while Phil Collins was playing drums during a Peter Gabriel session. The captured sound was unlike anything else. Peter Gabriel used the effect on the track "Intruder" from the album *Melt* (1980), and Phil Collins brought Hugh Padgham in for his own record, resulting in "In the Air Tonight" in 1981. This sound defined the drum sound of the 80s. Queen recorded "A Kind of Magic" here. Elton John recorded his version of "Candle in the Wind" in tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales, here. Oasis, Kate Bush, Bob Dylan, Duran Duran, Muse, Coldplay, and Jamiroquai also recorded here. It closed in 2008.
